Maximum warming occurs about one decade after a carbon dioxide emission

It is known that carbon dioxide emissions cause the Earth to warm, but no previous study has focused on examining how long it takes to reach maximum warming following a particular CO 2  emission. Using conjoined results of carbon-cycle and physical-climate model inter-comparison projects (Taylor  et al   2012 , Joos  et al   2013 ), we find the median time between an emission and maximum warming is 10.1 years, with a 90% probability range of 6.6–30.7 years. Figure 1 shows   Temperature increase from an individual emission of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). Time series of the marginal warming in mK (=milliKelvin = 0.001 K) per GtC (=10 15  g carbon) as projected by 6000 convolution-function simulations for the first 100 years after the emission. Maximum warming occurs a median of 10.1 years after the CO 2  emission event and has a median value of 2.2 mK GtC −1 . The colors represent the relative density of simulations in a given region of the plo...

A new EU carbon tax could start from 2026

Carbon tax will be applied to goods imported to the European Union from 2026,the flagship measure in a sweeping suite of European Commission policies unveiled last week to meet the bloc’s 2030 climate target. The tax will mean companies importing iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers and electricity to the EU will have to buy a certificate for every tonne of carbon dioxide embedded in their goods. In theory, it puts importers’ costs on a par with those of firms within the EU that have to pay for similar certificates in the EU’s internal carbon market. “The idea is to put foreign producers on a level playing field,” says Johanna Lehne at think tank E3G. Formally known as the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM),the scheme is the first of this scale and scope globally. The CBAM’s central aim is to combat “carbon leakage”,the risk of a company in the EU responding to the union’s climate policy costs by relocating outside the bloc to a country that may have a cheaper, but mor...

Simple solar water desalination system

The experimental new solar distiller incorporates a rectangular basin, inside of which is a horizontally oriented black steel cylinder. The basin is filled with undrinkable water, and the cylinder is slowly rotated by a solar-powered DC motor. The rotating hollow cylinder inside the solar distiller accelerates water evaporation in the vessel by forming a thin film of water on the outer and inner surface of the cylinder, which is constantly renewed with each turn. As the film is so thin, the water film quickly evaporates due to the rapid transfer of heat from the surface of the cylinder to the adjacent water film. To increase the temperature of water under the cylinder, the engineers used a solar collector. “ The performance improvement factor of the created solar distiller, compared to traditional devices, was at least 280% in the relatively hot months (June, July, and August) and at least 300% and 400% in the cooler months (September and October), at the same time, the cumulative wa...

Satellite shows that Afforestation helps increase low level cloud cover

Paper show that for 67% of sampled areas across the world, afforestation would increase low level cloud cover, which should have a cooling effect on the planet. Dependency of this effect is based on forest type, notably in Europe where needleleaf forests generate more clouds than broadleaf forests.  Source: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-021-24551-5 https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/Space_for_our_climate/Satellites_reveal_how_forests_increase_cloud_and_cool_climate
